Nawaz Sharif's daughter Maryam, widely seen as his political heir, gets a seven-year term for her involvement in the corruption case that centred around the purchase of luxury flats in London.
"The person they did choose to announce a verdict against was Nawaz Sharif".
In the written order of the court, the Supreme Court's Panama Papers case verdict and work of the joint investigation team has been referred to, along with an interview of Nawaz's son Hussain wherein he accepted ownership of the London properties.
According to media reports, Sharif and Maryam were in their apartment in the Avenfield building in London when the decision was announced.
The court asked the national anti-corruption bureau to launch a probe into the allegations against Sharif, which stem from the Panama Papers leak previous year linking his family to lucrative offshore businesses.
Hours before the verdict, Maryam's husband Safdar referred to it as a "funeral" for justice, the PML-N media office said in a statement. The sentencing also disqualified Nawaz and Safdar for life. Sharif's two sons, who are British citizens, also ignored the repeated court summons.
The court has also ruled that the Avenfield apartments of the Sharif family, in their possession since 1993, shall be seized by the federal government.
Hundreds of Thousands Protest Trump's Anti-Immigrant Policies
Such a backlash has prompted government officials to address these immigration policies and the problems associated with them. The ruling also found detained children must be housed in licensed facilities.
Nawaz and Maryam attended the majority of hearings, skipping a few as they visited London in between to spend time with Begum Kulsoom Nawaz.
Nawaz was disqualified as the PM following the top court's historic Panama Papers verdict on July 28, 2017.
Sharif, his daughter and his son-in-law all received prison sentences Friday for their roles in the massive corruption scandal that brought down his premiership. Khan is also hoping to become the country's next prime minister.
Sharif's nemesis Imran Khan of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) said even before verdict that Sharif will be sent to jail due to his corruption, as he accused him of using illness of his wife Kulsoom as "emotional blackmail".
After the conviction, it was not sure if Sharif and Maryam would come back to face rigorous imprisonment.
Pakistan's deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Friday said he has been punished because he tried to turn the course of Pakistan's 70-year history.
"The conviction of Sharif family in the Avenfield reference will be rejected by the people as they did with the Panama Papers case verdict", he had said while addressing an election rally in his native Mansehra area.
