"Lock and secure all homes, other buildings, and vehicles left behind to the extent possible and monitor updates from local authorities", the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Department said.

More than 1,000 fire personnel have responded to the fire, which sparked Thursday. This should slow the spread somewhat, but now firefighters have thousands of acres of fire to contend with.

Governor of California Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency for Siskiyou County, citing "extreme peril" to people and property. The fire has not been contained and some 500 people have been ordered to evacuate.
