And while the president is conducting his meetings, the first lady, Melania, will have an agenda of her own, in the company of her opposite number, Philip.

The move is likely to enrage critics of the president, who are planning a series of protests in London over the duration of his visit, which will see him meet Theresa May and the Queen among others.

Trump will arrive from the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels on Thursday and will attend a black-tie dinner at Blenheim Palace, a country house near Oxford where Churchill was born in 1874. Both are places where protesters can be kept out of sight and earshot.

Trump and his wife will then travel to Windsor Castle to meet Queen Elizabeth.

The dinner, where Trump will be accompanied by First Lady Melania Trump, will be preceded by a military ceremony and guests will include British and U.S. business leaders.

On Friday morning, Trump and May will visit an unidentified defense site connected to joint UK-US military training.
