The decision to name Taiwan, "Chinese Taipei" instead of "Taiwan, China" is innovative, however, because this is Taiwan's official name in worldwide organizations like the Olympic Games, the Federation Internationale de Football Association, or the World Health Organization.

The Global Times editorial warned that the U.S.is increasing tensions by sailing the Japan-based guided missile destroyers USS Mustin and USS Benfold through the strait that divides Taiwan and China.

Despite the lack of formal diplomatic ties, Taiwan remains an important American ally in the region, and the Trump administration has sought closer ties between Washington and Taipei.

US overtures towards Taiwan, from unveiling a new de facto embassy to passing the Taiwan Travel Act, which encourages USA officials to visit, have further escalated tension between Beijing and Taipei. An American aircraft carrier has not sailed through the Strait since 2007.

"The U.S. sending military ships through the Taiwan Strait is both a demonstration of its continuing support to Taiwan and of its willingness to exercise its maritime rights in China's periphery", said Abraham Denmark, a former deputy assistant secretary of defense for East Asia under President Barack Obama.

A former Japanese colony, Taiwan split from China amid civil war in 1949 and China cut off relations with Tsai's government after her 2016 inauguration because she refuses to recognize the island as a part of China.
