HBO's 'Game of Thrones' leads nominations for television's Emmy awards

'Game of Thrones' leads Emmys field with 22 nominations

Bill Hader, Megan Mullally, Ed Harris and Kelli O'Hara receive Emmy nominations

Although season seven of Game of Thrones aired in summer 2017, due to the Emmys' eligibility cutoff, the HBO drama had to wait until this year to submit anything for consideration. NBC topped the broadcast tally with 78 nominations, fueled by 21 bids for "Saturday Night Live", still on a satiric tear against the Trump administration.

Every year, there are some surprising oversights.

The news was not so good for Nicole Kidman at Thursday's Emmy nomination ceremony in Los Angeles. Glover won directing a year ago and was nominated for writing, losing to "Master of None"'s Aziz Ansari and Lena Waithe.

The return of "Thrones" did tighten the race up on the drama side, but the absence of "Veep" from contention this year didn't seem to do much to help on the comedy side.

In the comedy categories, hip-hop themed FX show "Atlanta" is up against Amazon's (AMZN.O) "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel", ABC's (DIS.N) "black-ish", "GLOW", "Curb Your Enthusiasm", quirky comedy "Barry", tech comedy "Silicon Valley" and "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt".

HBO's fantasy dragons-and-swords saga is a two-time best drama victor that sat out the last year's awards because of its production schedule.

The two drama series picked up 13 and 12 nods respectively, and both were recognized in the coveted top drama category.

Rhys and Brown will be up against Brown's castmate Milo Ventimiglia, along with Jason Bateman for "Ozark" and Ed Harris and Jeffrey Wright for "Westworld". They're also announcing some pretty big nominations. "Atlanta" and Glover had been atop our series and lead actor predictions during the nomination phase, while Hader was No. 1 in guest actor.
