The case follows a separate indictment that accused Russians of using social media to sow discord among American voters.

The indictment lays out a sweeping and coordinated effort to break into key Democratic email accounts, including those belonging to the Democratic National Committee, the Clinton campaign and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

Some of the documents and emails were released through a website identified in the indictment only as "Organization 1" - believed to be Julian Assange's WikiLeaks.

"President Trump should cancel his meeting with Vladimir Putin until Russian Federation takes demonstrable and transparent steps to prove that they won't interfere in future elections", said Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer.

BREAKING -The US Department of Justice (DOJ) indicted today 12 Russian intelligence agents on hacking charges related to the 2016 US Presidential Election.

The White House echoed some of those sentiments. "Tomorrow I go to Helsinki for a Monday meeting with Vladimir Putin".

They are accused of releasing the stolen emails on the web. Mr. Obama didn't take action against the Russian government until after the election, in December, when he expelled dozens of Russian operatives from the U.S. The Kremlin denies it interfered. "He is not a friend of the United States". Not a single Russian person indicted by Mueller has shown up in a United States court and they will likely continue to avoid global travel so they won't be apprehended.

Trump said he does not anticipate a "Perry Mason" moment when he confronts Putin on the issue, a reference to a decades-old US television courtroom drama, and he predicted Putin would continue to deny the allegations.

A candidate for Congress asked Russian hackers to provide documents on their campaign's opponent before the 2016 U.S. election, a charging document says. "On the evening of June 15, 2016 between 4:19PM and 4:56PM, defendants used their Moscow-based server to search for a series of English words and phrases that later appeared in Guccifer 2.0's first blog post falsely claiming to be a lone Romanian hacker responsible for the hacks in the hopes of undermining the allegations of Russian involvement".

"He's been very nice to me the times I've met him", Trump said of Putin at an impromptu news conference Thursday after the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit.

Two days later, the Russians added, "please tell me if i can help u anyhow ... it would be a great pleasure to me". "(P) retty standard", the person responded.

Longtime Trump political associate Roger Stone has admitted to communicating with Guccifer 2.0. At the same time, it admitted that the alleged hacking attack in fact did not eventually affect any votes.

The charges come as Mueller continues to investigate whether there was any coordination between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign on election interference.

Trump has long insisted that Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the election is a "witch hunt", despite US intelligence findings in 2017 that some level of interference occurred.
