The person, who was hospitalized and is now recovering, is an adult resident of the northeastern part of the county, the county health department said in a news release.

Three mosquito pools have tested positive for the West Nile virus in Peel Region, a spokesperson for Peel Public Health confirms.

A statement from the Shelby County Health Department on Thursday says the virus has been detected in mosquitoes throughout the county and officials are advising residents to take extra precautions.

The person with the first human case of West Nile Virus to be identified in Manitoba this year is a child.

West Nile virus is spread by the bite of an infected mosquito.

In Maryland, there were five reported cases of West Nile previous year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Between 2013 and 2015, there were no reported human cases with only single cases reported in 2016 and 2017. In Virginia, there were 13, and in the District, there were four. Most people infected show no symptoms, but approximately one in five will develop a fever along with other symptoms.

Those most at risk for serious complications are people older than 50 and people with suppressed immune systems.

Despite the low numbers of nuisance mosquitoes this summer, the numbers of infected Culex tarsalis continue to increase. Symptoms can include muscle aches, headache and fever.

Homeowners are also asked to eliminate standing water by cleaning eaves troughs, emptying bird baths, covering rain barrels with mosquito screens, getting rid of containers that collect water and landscaping for better drainage.
