Strenigthened Category 4 Hurricane Hector Heads to Hawaii

Hurricane Hector could collide with erupting Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii

Powerful Hurricane Hector continues moving toward Central Pacific

Hector has entered the Central Pacific as a Category 4 Hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale, with increased forward movement near 15 miles per hour and maximum sustained winds are near 140 miles per hour.

Little change in strength is expected for Monday, but some fluctuations in wind speed and a gradual weakening is forecast for Monday night, forecasters said.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu said Hector is forecast to pass south of the Big Island around midweek, with the storm expected to clear the region by Friday.

"Hector is our first hurricane this year".

Tropical storm Ileana was trailing John to the southeast but wasn't forecast to reach hurricane force.

The hurricane is expected to diverge from directly hitting the Hawaiian Islands.

Spaghetti models and charts show Hurricane Hector passing within a hairsbreadth of Hawaii's Big Island, where Kilauea rages on.

The storm was about 1,390 miles southeast of the Hawaiian islands on Sunday and should cross into the central Pacific ocean by Sunday night or early Monday morning.

The center of the storm was located about 1,360 miles east of South Point, Hawaii, as of the NHC's 2 a.m. PDT update. The average track errors are still close to 150 miles this far out. Depending on its ultimate track, the storm could bring thunderstorms, gusty winds and increased surf to parts of the island and could also cause risky rip currents off the east- and south-facing beaches. We introduced some elevated precipitation chances over the eastern slopes of the Big Island from Wednesday into Thursday as deep tropical moisture will likely move up the slopes of Maunakea and Maunaloa producing enhanced rainfall activity.

CNN meteorologist Haley Brink said while Hector is heading in Big Island 's general direction, it's too early to tell if it's on a collision course with the volcano.
