A secret recording of a conversation during a Spokane fundraiser for Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers is making national headlines because of comments Rep. Devin Nunes made about the federal attorney overseeing the probe into Russian election meddling, The Spokesman Review reports.
Nunes, who heads the House Intelligence Committee, seems to explain the main reason Congress hasn't taken up the issue is due to timing and the upcoming midterm elections.
He also said that impeaching Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein - which he favors, in theory - would delay the confirmation of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court. At one point, you could hear Congresswoman McMorris Rodgers chiming in.
Nunes also told the guests that Republicans are the safeguard against Trump being impeached.
Democratic lawmakers and pundits quickly condemned the remarks, saying they indicated Nunes was attempting to obstruct justice by suggesting Rosenstein's investigation, headed by special counsel Robert Mueller, should be quashed. Sessions said past year that he would keep his distance from inquiries related to the 2016 election owing to his role in Trump's campaign - a move that has frustrated the president, leading him to blame his own attorney general for the "Russian Witch Hunt Hoax".
In the recording Devin Nunes, a Republican Congressman and chair of the House Intelligence Committee, admitted that: "We have to keep the majority". -Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) In the series of recordings, as Maddow lays out in detail, Nunes also admits that a USA politician running for office who accepts and then releases, "let's say", the stolen emails from a foreign entity, that would be "criminal" activity.
Najib pleads not guilty to money laundering
The new government reopened the investigations stifled under Najib's rule and barred him and his wife from leaving the country. On Tuesday, a luxury yacht that was allegedly procured using stolen money from 1MDB was returned to the Malaysian government.
We asked Fuse Washington, the organization that leaked the audio, about the context of the clip regarding impeachment.
REP. NUNES (R-CA): "They know it's ridiculous to go after the president for obstruction of justice".
He went on to say he supports Rosenstein's impeachment but "the question is the timing of it right before the election". "I don't think we should be cavalier with this process or term".
"If Sessions won't unrecuse and Mueller won't clear the president, we're the only ones", Nunes says.
"So if we actually vote to impeach, OK, what that does is that triggers the Senate then has to take it up", he said.
"Well, and you have to decide what you want right now because the Senate only has so much time", he added.
