Indonesia's Lombok Island hit by deadly earthquake

In July, over 680 people were trapped on a volcano on tourist island Lombok, after a deadly quake hit the island nation.

Lombok had already been hit by a 6.4 magnitude quake on July 29 that killed 17 people and briefly stranded several hundred trekkers on the slopes of a volcano.

Almost 1,500 people have been hospitalized with serious injuries and more than 156,000 have been displaced due to the extensive damage to thousands of homes.

Some areas still hadn't been reached, with rescuers hampered by collapsed bridges, electricity blackouts and damaged roads blocked with debris.

The death toll is so far estimated to be over 90.

The quake, recorded at magnitude 7.0 by the U.S. Geological Survey, struck early Sunday evening at a depth of 10.5 kilometres in the northern part of Lombok. The quake claimed more than a dozen lives.

Thousands of residents of Mataram flocked to evacuate the capital of West Nusa Tenggara province (NTB) following a tsunami warning after the 7.0 magnitude natural disaster rocked Lombok Island on Sunday night.

Lombok airport was also operating. Some 236 people were injured and more than 20,000 displaced, he said.

BNPB spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said emergency units in its hospitals were overflowing and some patients were being treated in parking lots. Muhammad Faozal, the head of West Nusa Tenggara's tourism agency, said there were about 1,200 mostly foreign tourists on the Gilis.

"Tourists report terrifying tremors".

My thoughts and prayers for everyone in Lombok and Bali. Hotels and other buildings in both locations are not allowed to exceed the height of coconut trees.

Indonesia is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, making it susceptible to earthquakes.

In 2004 a tsunami triggered by a magnitude 9.3 undersea quake off the coast of Sumatra in western Indonesia killed 220,000 people in countries around the Indian Ocean, including 168,000 in Indonesia.
