Juventus fans gathering to watch the five-time Ballon d'Or victor at Villar Perosa - in a rural area of Piedmont in northern Italy - held up banners.

But with the extra excitement of being within touching distance of Ronaldo, the supporters couldn't wait and the match was called off 20 minutes before the full 90.

Established custom dictates that five minutes after half-time fans invade the pitch, bringing the game to a halt as fans charge after and greet their heroes.

Cesare Bertoncello, from Turin, who was pointed out to AFP by security as being the first person to arrive in the queue to get into the ground at 0900 (0700 GMT) recalled the dominating presence of the Agnellis in years passed.

After a wildly successful nine years at Real Madrid which yielded four Champions League titles, Cristiano Ronaldo made the move to Italian side Juventus in the summer, for around £90m.

David Wagner: Huddersfield 'tried everything' against Chelsea
It came in the 34th minute when N'Golo Kante's mis-hit strike from Willian's cross bounced past Huddersfield goalkeeper Ben Hamer. Huddersfield, too, can take heart from the performance, certainly in the first half.

Last season, Ronaldo was his usual dominant self in Europe as he smashed 15 goals to top the Champions League scoring charts and fired Real Madrid to continental glory for the third straight year.

After he had finished with his autograph duty, Ronaldo put his game face on and only took eight minutes to score his first goal in black and white.

"With the arrival of Ronaldo our expectations are higher for the Champions League".

Paulo Dybala then got himself a brace - his second a tap-in on the rebound after Loria failed to keep hold of Ronaldo's effort.

There should be more fans at the match than the entire population of Villar Perosa, with the 5,000 tickets available long-since sold out and even more supporters desperate to try and catch a glimpse of their new idol.
