BC wildfire smoke prompts air quality warnings in Western Canada

Sarah Henderson of the B.C. Centre for Disease Control said children's lungs don't fully develop until about age 10 and are therefore more sensitive so it's best for them to stay indoors when air quality is poor.

Metro Vancouver announced Sunday it would continue a previous air quality advisory because of the high levels of fine particulate matter, which doctors say can be absorbed into the blood stream and lungs, causing exhaustion and confusion. Climate change may be a contributing factor to the alerts and to poor air quality, said meteorologist David Brown.

"It may be short-lived, but we expect at least a couple days of cleaner air coming up", a multiagency update said. Unhealthy air will be common across the lowlands.

- Continued smoke from Northern California wildfires, along with pollution from cars, has prompted the Bay Area Air Quality Management District to issue a Spare the Air alert for Sunday.

Much of the state's air quality is at the Unhealthy status.

A wider air quality warning is forecast to remain in effect through at least noon Tuesday. Simon said he won't let the kids ride as far or take part in as many running games like tag while the air quality is bad.

In British Columbia, more than 10,000 homes across the province are on alert to evacuate due to the almost 600 wildfires burning, BC Wildfire Service spokesman Kevin Skrepnek said.

"Most of the summer we've kept our onshore winds, even though it's been hot, which kept the smoke out of here until about two weeks ago", said Marriott.
