To quarterback Matt Ryan's credit, he did not blame offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian. But his team has been excellent in games decided by one score or less over the last season-plus. "But at the end we got a win".

A weather delay pushed kick-off back 45 minutes, forcing fans to wait for the unveiling of the "world champions" banner following the franchise's first Super Bowl victory.

"We made a ton of mistakes today", safety Malcolm Jenkins noted. "We trust our matchups and do we do our job".

They then held off the Atlanta Falcons in the same end of the field that they won the divisional round playoff game last season.

The Falcons had a first down at the 10 but Ryan threw four straight incomplete passes.

The Eagles are one resilient bunch.

In Julio Jones' case, it's simple to say, "Who needs it?"

The Philadelphia Eagles beat the Atlanta Falcons 18-12 in the National Football League opener.

During Thursday night's 2018 season opener, when Nick Foles reeled in a pass nearly identical to the iconic play from the 41-33 Super Bowl LII victory, just about everyone dubbed it Philly Special 2.0 (see story).

With only Eagles defensive end Michael Bennett taking to the bench in protest during the national anthem, when things finally did kick off on NBC just after 9 PM ET, it certainly didn't seem to be the most inspiring game. He wandered behind teammates near the bench and adjusted his equipment this time. This trick play saw quarterback Nick Foles take the snap in shotgun, hand it to running back Corey Clement on his left, who pitched it to wide receiver Nelson Agholor on a reverse, who finally tossed it to Foles for a 15-yard gain.

"Offensively, we were sort of misfiring a little bit", Pederson said.

Philadelphia's defence overcame a pair of blunders to temporarily preserve the lead. Meanwhile, Foles and the offense had no yards - 113 fewer than the Falcons - and one first down in the opening quarter. A sack by Fletcher Cox on third down was negated by Derek Barnett's offside penalty to keep the drive going.

Cornerback Rasul Douglas' interception at the Eagles' 4-yard line with 12:58 to play.

"It's great to have it at the right time if you can catch a team (off guard)", Foles said. The teams would trade touchdowns in the fourth quarter, with the Falcons botching an extra point, and the Eagles scoring on a two-point conversion. Right tackle Ryan Schraeder said the line gave up too many hits.
