Luis Enrique couldn't have asked for a much better start as coach of Spain's national team.

"The comparisons with the World Cup do not make sense, today we were very effective and everything went wonderfully well, they have had some chances, they have not done it effectively and we have played marvelously with very attractive goals".

Croatia, so impressive in keeping the ball at the World Cup, lost confidence as Spain dominated possession and picked their opponents off easily, inflicting biggest defeat on the Croats after a 5-1 loss to England in a World Cup qualifier in 2009.

Croatia's midfield boasts Real Madrid's Luka Modric, one of the three finalists in FIFA's The Best awards, and Ivan Rakitic, who worked under Luis Enrique at Barcelona.

Spain have rattled in the goals against Croatia to take charge of their Nations League group. Croatia and England have no points after their respective losses to Spain.

Elche native Saul Niguez opened the night's scoring in the 24th minute with a leaping header off Dani Carvajal's long diagonal cross that bounced past Croatia goalkeeper Lovre Kalinic.

Hurricane Florence Could Be East Coast's Strongest Storm In Decades
We sit in about a 10-20% chance as having tropical storm force winds enter our forecast sometime Wednesday night into Thursday. By the time it reaches the US mainland, the NHC says Florence will strengthen into "an extremely risky major hurricane".

Ten minutes later Marco Asensio made it 2-nil with a powerful shot.

Dalic's men did play a friendly on Thursday night, drawing 1-1 with Portugal as Ivan Perisic and Pepe exchanged goals, but he has to deal with several team changes since the World Cup.

Enrique took over Spain after the team's elimination against Russian Federation in the round of 16 of the World Cup.

Elsewhere, Belgium play their first competitive game since securing third place at the World Cup with a 2-0 victory over England in Group A2, as they travel to Iceland, in one of six games available to watch on Sky Sports Football via the red button. Spain was coached by Fernando Hierro in Russian Federation after Julen Lopetegui was sacked two days before the tournament.

Just like it did against England, Spain was aggressive without the ball on Tuesday, pressing high and playing a more direct game that takes the focus away from short passes, something that has become a characteristic of Enrique's team.
