The Post's Parker noted the conundrum for the White House, which is trying to dispatch Trump only to red parts of the country to campaign, but the effort to target the president is undone by the commander-in-chief's Twitter account.

Like Cohn, Porter features prominently in "Fear" and is described as a gatekeeper who curtailed some of Trump's most reckless impulses. Bob Woodward joins us now live to talk about his book.

Controversy on his credibility is not a new issue for Woodward. Even before the publication date Tuesday, thanks to pre-orders "Fear" was the No. 1 bestseller in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Germany.

"The idea that the Secretary of Defense has to tell the president that all of these actions are created to prevent the ultimate catastrophe", Woodward said. Now, at age 75, Woodward is pursuing another embattled president, this one leading a tumultuous administration and awaiting the judgment of a special counsel's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

And at one point, the president agrees.

Woodward dismissed their written statements as unpersuasive.

Woodward avoided using the word "lying", saying instead.
