A 22-year-old man accused of stabbing an Iowa State University student to death while she golfed Monday morning in Ames - in an apparent attempt to fulfill his "urge to rape and kill a woman" - lived, went to school and committed crimes in Carroll, Greene and Guthrie counties, according to court records.
Barquin, the 2018 Big 12 champion and Iowa State Female Athlete of the year, had no known prior relationship with Richards, Huff said.
"Yes, she was an wonderful golfer, yes she was a terrific engineering student, yes she even died a horrific death, but this doesn't capture who she was".
At the service, near the university's chapel, friends and fellow students shared memories of Barquin Arozamena, held candles and shed tears.
It was just a month later Richards found himself in front of judge again for stealing a vehicle.
"This is a tragic and senseless loss of a talented young woman and an acclaimed student athlete", Iowa State University President Dr. Wendy Wintersteen stated in the release. She won the 2018 Big 12 championship, an annual tournament contested between 10 leading USA sports universities, and was crowned European Ladies' Amateur champion in July.
Richards was considered homeless and had been living in nearby woods, according to police.
"It's still very troubling for something like this to happen in broad daylight in a community that is as safe as Ames is", Ames police Cmdr.

Celia Barquin Arozamena's initials will be on the back of Iowa State and Akron players' helmets on Saturday.
Barquin Arozamena was a stand-out golfer for ISU and was working to finish her degree in civil engineering. An immigrant from Mexico is charged in the July slaying of University of Iowa student Mollie Tibbetts, who vanished while out for a run in the town of Brooklyn. The acquaintance told police Richards was covered in blood, sand and water. He had "fresh scratches on his face consistent with fighting", the affidavit says.
Police said officers recovered a knife that Richards had given to acquaintances after the slaying, as well as bloody clothing from his belongings. Paul Rounds, a public defender assigned to represent him, filed paperwork asserting that his client didn't wish to speak to investigators. She had a special shine about her - she was just one of those people.
"We are all devastated", Iowa State head women's golf coach Christie Martens added.
"When we ask her to do something, she does it and more", Martens said in the video.
Employees of Sparky's One Stop saw him try to steal two energy drinks and confronted him.
Richards was arrested in May 2015 for domestic abuse assault for dragging a woman from his house in a headlock.
