Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker Makeup Revealed

First Video Of Joaquin Phoenix As The Joker

We have our first look at Joaquin Phoenix's old-school take on the classic character, the Joker.

The first look at Joaquin Phoenix in full clown makeup in Todd Phillips' standalone Joker movie is only the latest example of that, and will nearly certainly not be the last.

I've had my doubts about this project from its inception, but the video itself is promising.

But as "Laughing" by the Guess Who plays on the soundtrack, the scene shows images of the garishly made-up Joker flashing on Phoenix's face, like a spectre on a passing train. The make-up looks a bit more clownish-Ceasar Romero than psychotic-Heath Ledger, and definitely different from whatever Jared Leto was. "Joker", Phillips captioned the teaser.

So when director Todd Phillips released this screen test of Joaquin in the clown makeup, I was interested to see what it would look like.

Not bad for a 42-year-old with four back surgeries who returned to competition in December at No. 1,199 in the world. This birdie on the 13th was enough to put Woods five shots clear, and demonstrated the kind of mood Woods was in.

He has slicked back green hair, a white face and exaggerated red lips and eyebrows.

The forthcoming DC Comics film dives into the backstory of the Joker. The fascinating thing about this is that the Joker doesn't have a set or established origin story like his crime fighting counterpart, so it will be interesting to see what Phillips does with the character and how Phoenix portrays him.

The brief video clip involves a slow zoom in to Phoenix as Arthur Fleck, his protagonist's pre-Joker form, who's described in the official Warner Bros. plot synopsis as "a man disregarded by society". The cast now includes Joaquin Phoenix, Marc Maron, Glenn Fleshler, Shea Whigham, Zazie Beetz, Robert De Niro, Frances Conroy, Josh Pais, and Brett Cullen.

Joker hits theaters on October 4, 2019.
