USA 'disturbed and deeply disappointed' by European Union over Iran sanctions

Rouhani: US Threat to Stop Iranian Oil Exports 'Empty Promise'

EU announces legal entity to maintain business with Iran

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Thursday the United States had nothing to show for its appearance at the UN General Assembly this week, extending an exchange of insults with Tehran's arch-adversary. "Perhaps on this path we will sustain certain pressures, but certainly the United States will not reach its objective".

The slump first started when US President Donald Trump threatened to quit the deal and reimpose economic sanctions in October 2017.

Saudi Energy Minister Khalid al-Falih told reporters in Algiers that he does not influence prices.

Pompeo was referring to EU's plans for a "special objective vehicle" (SPV) created to circumvent USA sanctions against Iran's oil exports, which are part of the sanctions to be re-introduced by the US on November 4 alongside other sanctions on Tehran's worldwide banking operations.

Iran's economy is already suffering from the sanctions that Washington reimposed after walking away from the nuclear agreement and the United States has threatened to punish companies from other nations that continue doing business with Iran.

Turning to Syria, Mr Trump assailed Russian Federation and Iran for backing President Bashar la-Assad in his brutal war in Syria, saying: "The Syrian regime's butchery is enabled by Russian Federation and Iran".

Mr. Pompeo, addressing a pressure group on the sidelines of annual United Nations meetings, responded by saying he was "disturbed and indeed deeply disappointed" by the European Union announcement.

The Trump administration re-imposed a host of economic sanctions on Iran in August, and plans to impose sanctions on Iran's crude oil exports in November.

UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar Gargash told Reuters at the United Nations General Assembly he was concerned by the public differences between the remaining European signatories to the accord - France, Britain and Germany - and the United States.

"For the first time, the United States president was asking other members not to adhere to a resolution of the very same Security Council over which he was presiding", quipped Rouhani. They accuse Iran of supporting destabilising proxies in Lebanon, Syria, Yemen and Iraq. He said a date and location would be announced soon. "In its estimation might makes right".

At the General Assembly, Rouhani said, Trump was laughed at when he began to speak in praise of his administration's performance, adding that global media took that laughter as "humiliating for the American government and nation".

Trump added that "much work remains to be done" with North Korea and said, "The sanctions will stay in place until denuclearization occurs".

On North Korea, Mr Trump called for sanctions to be strictly enforced against Pyongyang - a message directed at Russian Federation and China which are pushing for an easing of punitive measures to reward North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Under the nuclear deal struck by Iran and six major powers - Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States - Tehran agreed to limit its nuclear program in return for relief from USA and other economic sanctions.
