At Least 11 Dead In Haiti Earthquake

An earthquaked measuring 5.9 on the Richter scaled jolted northwestern Haiti on Sunday, killing at least 11 people.

The epicenter of the quake was located about 19 kilometers (12 miles) northwest of the city of Port-de-Paix, the US Geological Survey reported.

Images of damaged homes and partially destroyed buildings were circulating on social media, but AFP was not immediately able to confirm their authenticity.

The quake was 7.3 miles below the surface.

No immediate damage or injuries had been reported, according to the Associated Press.

A magnitude 5.9 quake struck near the northernmost tip of Haiti late on Saturday, injuring a number of people and causing some damage to buildings including an auditorium that collapsed, authorities and media reported.

"Search and rescue, and assessment still ongoing", Chandler said. It struck at a depth of around 7 miles.

Saturday's quake was felt in Port-au-Prince but initial reports on Twitter said it had not caused major damage there.

Haitian Prime Minister Jean Henry Ceant took to Twitter to urge people to remain calm following the natural disaster and provide details on the emergency response.

The quake was felt lightly in the capital, as well as in the neighbouring Dominican Republic and in eastern Cuba.

Haiti's civil protection agency put the preliminary number of injured at 188. "The [disaster] risk management system and the regional branches of the Civil Protection are on standby to assist the inhabitants of the affected areas".

The police chief for the north-west region, Jackson Hilaire, said seven people died in Port-de-Paix, while the interior minister, Reynaldo Brunet, said three people had died further south in the town of Gros-Morne.

In 2010, a magnitude 7.1 tremor killed more than 250,000 people in Haiti. Tens of thousands of people are still displaced as a result of the quake.
