Ryan Coogler to Write and Direct ‘Black Panther 2’

Sources tell Variety that Coogler is on board to write and direct the sequel to the hit superhero tentpole "Black Panther".

"Black Panther" blew away box office records earlier this year, making $1.3 billion worldwide, including $700 million domestically - the biggest domestic box office gross for any Marvel film.

Coogler is the fifth director in Marvel history to helm the first sequel to a hero's maiden MCU adventure, a club that so far includes Jon Favreau, James Gunn, Jon Watts, and Joss Whedon. Pitted against his own family, the king must rally his allies and release the full power of Black Panther to defeat his foes and embrace his future as an Avenger.

Ryan Coogler (Creed, Fruitvale Station) directed from a screenplay he wrote with Joe Robert Cole (The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story).

In the meantime, Coogler is developing Wrong Answer, a drama film he will be directing with Michael B. Jordan starring. "We're watching the final playback, where you see the final film and check for any last-minute changes, and when it ended I just instinctually leaned over to Ryan and said, 'I think this is the best movie we've ever made'".

The plan is for Coogler to commence writing the script early next year, so they can start the production later in '19, early 2020 at the latest. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Coogler has already begun thinking about the script well ahead of Marvel's official press release. It is unknown if "Black Panther 2" will now become his primary focus if he will still tries to squeeze that smaller film in.
