Illinois, Colorado, Washington report cases of polio-like illness in children

6 Minnesota kids diagnosed with rare, polio-like disease

Klobuchar Calls for CDC Investigation of Polio-Like Illness

- Add the Keystone State to the list of places now dealing with a mysterious polio-like illness that can partially paralyze children. But shortly thereafter, unusual and frightening symptoms, such as limb weakness, face drooping and difficulty talking or swallowing, set in.

AFM affects less than one in a million children.

In Washington, all of the patients suspected of having AFM are under age 6 and all had symptoms of a respiratory illness in the week before developing symptoms of AFM, the Department of Health reported on Wednesday.

Symptoms may include muscle weakness in the arms, legs and neck.

Since Orville Young, a 4 year old in Minnesota, fell ill with a fever in July, CBS News reported, he has experienced difficulties moving his right arm - sometimes experiencing full paralysis - and was diagnosed with AFM.

"Physicians are on the lookout for the more common symptoms", said Dr. Angela Sinner, of Gillette Children's Hospital. The condition was first described in 2014 and doctors assumed a virus was to blame, but they didn't know which one.

"The CDC has indicated there might be some increases in cases, and in mid-September we advised health care providers to be vigilant and report to the health department so that we can pass on the information to the CDC", Arnold said.

The CDC says that both the cause and long-term effects of the disease remain unknown.

The CDC has recorded 362 official cases of acute flaccid myelitis in the US between August 2014 through August 2018.

"Of the AFM cases, 11 tested positive for enterovirus A71, one tested positive for enterovirus D68, and two tested negative for enteroviruses", the department said in an online statement Tuesday.

In previous years, cases of AFM in Colorado and elsewhere have been positive for a different enterovirus, EV-D68.

"You can protect yourself and your children from poliovirus by getting vaccinated", the CDC advises. It may also be helpful to wash hands often with soap and water, the agency says. You can reduce the chance of mosquito bites by using insect repellent and keeping kids indoors during times when mosquitos are prevalent. While rare officials over the USA are dealing with a spike in cases.

"If their child gets an enteroviral infection, they need to look for symptoms such as sudden onset of arm and leg weakness, difficulty swallowing".
