Saudi Arabia has pledged to retaliate economically for any US punitive action. "The strong moral and legal responsibility which our father instilled in us obliges us to call for the establishment of an independent and impartial global commission to inquire into the circumstances of his death", they said in the statement. "So far, he seems to have been quite headstrong on the whole thing and he hasn't backed down".

Khashoggi, who recently has been living in Virginia and writing columns for The Washington Post, hasn't been seen since October 2, when he entered the Saudi Consulate to handle paperwork for his upcoming marriage.

Flake said if the Saudis did, in fact, kill Khashoggi, Congress might specifically curtail US military aid to Saudi-led forces in Yemen.

If the autopsy specialist left Saudi Arabia for Istanbul before Khashoggi entered the consulate, as Turkish sources have asserted, it might be hard to square with the explanation that any killing was the result of a botched interrogation, and not premeditated. Trump visited the kingdom on his first overseas trip as president and has touted USA arms sales to Saudi Arabia.

Former Director of the CIA, John O. Brennan, stated that that the reasons for the Saudi leadership's denials of involvement in the case of Jamal Khashoggi is meaningless. "But if that support is not forthcoming, Erdogan may very well choose to pursue a less aggressive approach and offer the Saudis a way out".
