The 30-year-old had been with the Gwinnett County Police Dept. for almost three years, his first job as police officer.
Officers say they believe Maynard could still be close by to the incident, so that's where they're focusing. He said becoming a police officer had been his brother's lifelong dream. The suspects initially fled the scene in a black sedan, but they crashed the vehicle less than a mile away and continued their flight on foot. Pretlow, who was not injured, is facing an aggravated assault charge stemming from that encounter.
The suspects fired through the vehicle's window before driving off, police say.

Toney's death was the second fatal shooting of a law enforcement officer this week. A suspect was taken into custody. North Carolina State Trooper Kevin K. Conner was killed Wednesday during a traffic stop near the border with SC. Smith also said Crime Stoppers is offering a $5,000 reward for anyone with information.
