Viral Outbreak at New Jersey Rehabilitation Center Leaves 6 Children Dead

Eighteen cases of adenovirus, six of them fatal, have been confirmed among pediatric residents at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Haskell, according to a statement from the New Jersey Department of Health.

There have been 18 cases of adenovirus at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Haskell, about 30 miles (50 kilometers) northwest of NY, the New Jersey Health Department said in a statement.

Illnesses resulting from this family of viruses are usually fairly minor, although certain strains can cause more severe sicknesses.

The strain in the New Jersey outbreak is No. 7 and is affecting "medically fragile" children with severely compromised immune systems, according to the Health Department.

The health facility has been told not to admit any new patients until the outbreak has ended. A team was sent back Tuesday.

The outbreak occurred at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Haskell, in northern New Jersey. Symptoms can range from a sore throat and fever to intestinal inflammation and neurological disease.

State officials were first notified of respiratory illnesses at the center on October 9, officials said. The department is not releasing exact ages of any patients because of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and privacy reasons, Kirgan said. Those with weakened immune systems may also carry and transmit the virus after they have recovered from an illness, the CDC says.

The Center acts as a nursing home, rehabilitation center and pediatric center, offering short- and long-term care, according to its website.

An inspection team from the state health department responded to the facility on Sunday and another team from the agency returned to the center on Tuesday.

A scientific paper cited by the CDC reported that a 1998 outbreak of type 7 adenovirus at a pediatric chronic-care facility in Chicago claimed the lives of eight patients.
