Notorious Boston gangster James "Whitey" Bulger has died in federal custody almost five years after being sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison, the U.S. Department of Justice confirms.

Two years later, he was convicted of participating in 11 murders in the 1970's and 80's. A person familiar with his move told the Boston Globe that Bulger's health was deteriorating.

News reports that Bulger is dead at age 89, citing multiple sources.

Bulger had recently been moved from a prison in Florida to a transfer facility in Oklahoma City that houses inmates as they are being moved between facilities.

Bulger was arrested with his girlfriend, Catherine Greig.

Following his conviction, Bulger was transferred to the US Penitentiary Coleman II in Sumterville, Fla., in 2014 from another high-security facility in Arizona, according to the Boston Globe.

Most recently, he was portrayed by Johnny Depp in the 2015 movie Black Mass, which documented his life story as a gangster and longtime Federal Bureau of Investigation informant.

She admitted identity fraud and harboring Bulger in 2012, and is now serving time in a Minnesota jail.
