A newlywed couple died just hours after tying the knot on Saturday night when the helicopter they were traveling in crashed in Texas.

"We celebrated their fairy tale wedding and they were surrounded by their family and friends as they flew off in the family helicopter", Eric Smith, a family friend, posted on Facebook.

The groom's grandfather, William Byler, confirmed to local Houston news station KTRK that the helicopter crashed at the family's ranch in Uvalde, Texas, about 80 miles west of San Antonio. The NTSB said the incident involved a Bell 206B - a two-bladed, twin-engine chopper.

Their deaths were first announced by The Houstonian, the independent student newspaper of Sam Houston State University, where the newlyweds were both seniors. The aircraft's pilot also was killed.

The Uvalde County Sheriff's Office posted on its Facebook page that the office received a call around midnight about the crash.
