As we saw at the beginning of this column, American woman giving birth outside the U.S. were never assumed to be giving birth to citizens of whatever country they were living in at the time.

Imagine schools and campuses who gave out admissions and scholarships trying to revoke their decisions. Or, maybe the children will have a new application, new date; further alienating them in the morass of the broken immigration system.

In an era of Donald Trump, Jair Bolsonaro, and Viktor Orban, affirming the significance of constitutional birthright citizenship and equal protection seems as important as ever.

They simply changed their laws of citizenship. Many come from China.We're not talking just South America, Latin America. "And it has to end".

Trump is also right to condemn illegal immigrants who break laws by crossing the border without proper documents, and then raise families here.

President Trump would have been right at home on the floor of the Senate in the 1860s alongside such opponents of birthright citizenship.

If you are born in the United States, you are a citizen and entitled to all the privileges and immunities that entails and the equal protection of the laws.

Clearly, comprehensive immigration reform is needed, as are more secure borders and more immigration courts to process those seeking asylum and to deport those without legitimate claims. You get nothing more than they do.
