Of the 23 women on ballots for the 100-seat U.S. Senate and 237 vying for the 435-seat House, more than 75 percent are Democrats, according to the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University.

Rashida Tlaib, a social worker born in Detroit to Palestinian immigrant parents, won a House seat in a district where she ran unopposed by a Republican candidate.

Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Rashida Tlaib of MI became the first Muslim women elected to Congress. Sharice Davids defeated a Republican incumbent in Kansas to become the first openly LGBTQ woman to represent Kansas.

Joining Tlaib's place in history is current Minnesota state Rep. Ilhan Omar, who is poised to become the first Somali-American in Congress.

Arizona will send a woman - either Democratic representative Kyrsten Sinema or Republican representative Martha McSally - to the Senate for the first time. The House candidate Liuba Grechen Shirley of NY, who is expected to lose her race, made history as the first woman to spend federal campaign funds on childcare.

Republican women had significant - though far fewer - barrier-breaking election night victories.

Among the new lawmakers headed to the House is Jennifer Wexton, a Virginia state senator who defeated incumbent Barbara Comstock in one of the most closely watched races across the country.

Idaho gubernatorial candidate Paulette Jordan also lost her race to become the country's first Native American governor. She added that even women of color who were unsuccessful will inspire a new crop of candidates, similar to the white women encouraged to run after Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential election loss. Mills, now the state's attorney general, has won the governorship, checking another state off a long list that has never had a female chief executive. And although she has some age on Ocasio-Cortez - she's turning 30 in December - Finkenauer is still one of the youngest people ever elected to the House.
