NBA Free Agent Rumors: Lakers To Sign Tyson Chandler After Buyout With Suns, Clearing Waivers

He will sign a one-year deal with the team for the rest of the season.

And with the Suns no closer to winning than the day he signed with them, and Chandler being 36, it makes flawless sense that he'd be looking for a new home.

That, according to Stein, is the Lakers, who are getting solid minutes out of JaVale McGee in the pivot, but are severely lacking while he is off the floor.

The Phoenix Suns are buying out Chandler's contract, a move that will allow the 18-year veteran - once he clears waivers - to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers. (Chandler last averaged more than 1.4 blocks per game in 2006-07 at age 24.) However, as he's aged, Chandler has no longer excelled in that regard.

"They can pick up right where they left off... we're picking up from scratch", the three-time National Basketball Association champion told a news conference at the Lakers training facility in El Segundo.

The Lakers were playing at Portland on Saturday night.

His contract is not set to expire for another season and there are 13.6 million dollars still to be paid, while in LA he will be paid a minimum of 2.1 million.

Might the Lakers have been better off waiting?

That raises the question of whether the Lakers might have been better off waiting for another center to come free on the buyout market.

Chandler should provide some much-needed depth to the Lakers' group of centers. But the urgency of the situation amid their slow start surely forced the Lakers to make a move sooner than they wanted. If, however, the Lakers consider the position fixed with the addition of Chandler, they may regret that decision.
