All Eyes on Florida's Gubernatorial Race: Will Florida Go Blue?

Andrew Gillum vs. Ron DeSantis: LIVE Florida gubernatorial election results

Republican candidate Ron DeSantis has defeated Democrat Andrew Gillum to become the next governor of Florida.

After Tuesday's elections, Florida Republicans maintained a stronghold on the governor's mansion, are poised to sweep the state Cabinet races and are a recount away from ousting a US senator who's the only statewide Democratic office-holder.

DeSantis, who attended Yale University and Harvard Law School, resigned his seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in September to focus exclusively on his gubernatorial bid. The Tallahassee mayor won his primary on a progressive platform but has drifted toward the center in the runup to the general election, posing with establishment figures like Cory Booker (D-NJ) and former President Barack Obama.

Democratic strategist Steve Vancore also said Florida tilts toward Republicans in statewide races.

But Republican Mike DeWine defeated Democrat Richard Cordray in OH, one of the highest-profile governor's races, according to an NBC News projection.

Hill believes her high-profile status put her at odds with supporters of Gillum's opponent, Ron DeSantis and President Donald Trump.

Results in Florida's most important elections showed Republican candidates winning the race for governor and leading for U.S. Senate, but Democrats captured two crucial South Florida congressional seats.

Gillum had 60 percent of the vote in Miami-Dade and 68 percent in Broward County against DeSantis.

"We recognize that, you know, we didn't win it tonight".

"So is it a red state?"

DeSantis quit his job in Congress to focus on the gubernatorial race, a heated affair that largely reflected the broader national tensions over race and class in the Trump era.

The outcome of elections for state positions could also affect future control of the U.S. House of Representatives.

The race was the much-anticipated match-up of the ideological wings of each of the major political parties, with DeSantis representing the GOP base that backed Trump, Gillum representing the activist grassroots element of the Democratic Party.

"In Florida there is a choice between a Harvard/Yale educated man named @RonDeSantisFL who has been a great Congressman and will be a great Governor - and a Dem who is a thief and who is Mayor of poorly run Tallahassee said to be one of the most corrupt cities in the Country!" We cast our ballots this morning to secure Florida's future.

Under Georgia law, if neither Abrams nor Kemp wins a majority of the vote on Tuesday, their battle continues to a December runoff. Despite implications that DeSantis was racially insensitive - an idea he angrily disputed during a debate - he was able to win the state that Trump carried in 2016.
