Key US midterm races to watch - and when to watch them

The Fight for the Senate, 2018: The Results As They Come In

The significance of the Republican victory in the Senate, which the party has dominated for the past four years, was magnified because Democrats wrested House control from the GOP.

As to the Senate, Republicans have a much better chance of keeping control. Joe Donnelly in IN and Republican Marsha Blackburn's win in Tennessee made it much more hard for Democrats to make inroads.

In the House, the Fox News Power Rankings reflect 29 "toss-up" races. McGrath raised millions in small donations and rocketed into contention thanks to a viral video introducing her candidacy, but her bid fell short in a district where Trump beat Clinton by 15 percentage points.

In Virginia's 7th District, a Republican-leaning area near Richmond, Republican Representative Dave Brat was trailing Democrat Abigail Spanberger, a former Central Intelligence Agency officer.

Carol Burton, another Democratic voter says she voted against the Republicans: "We need a curb on Trump, there won't be any checks on him if Republicans win". "The Democrats still essentially have no path to the majority without winning one of these three states: North Dakota, Tennessee, and Texas, and the Republicans retain what appear to be edges in all three".

Striking a dark tone at a rally in IN on Monday evening, Mr Trump accused Democrats without offering any evidence of "openly encouraging millions of illegal aliens to break our laws, violate our borders and overrun our country".

Despite the shocking news that the Rasmussen Reports Generic Congressional Ballot on Monday rated Republicans leading with "likely midterm voters" for the first time by 46 percent to the Democrats' 45 percent, California's Democrat House delegation is busy jockeying to gain powerful leadership positions if the Democrats flip House control.

But two years after an election that proved polls and prognosticators wrong, an air of uncertainty - and stormy weather across parts of the country - clouded the outcome of high-stakes elections from Florida to Alaska and everywhere in between. The GOP's grip on high-profile governorships in Georgia and Wisconsin were at risk as well.

According to CNN, exit polling showed that two thirds of voters considered the election to be about Trump, whose approval rating remains below 50 per cent. Almost 4 in 10 said they were casting ballots to express opposition to him, while just 1 in 4 said their vote was an expression of support. "The President has energized a staggering number of Americans at packed arenas and in overflow crowds at rallies across the country", Sanders said.

This midterm election has generated a lot more heat and a lot more voter interest than previous midterms because in many ways it's a referendum on President Trump.

Trump was spending Election Day at the White House and tweeting support for Republicans in the toughest races. The party has pledged to check the president's power and start a slew of investigations on matters including his tax returns, Russian involvement in the 2016 election and actions by his administration.

Democrats are favoured by election forecasters to pick up the minimum of 23 House seats they need for a majority, which would enable them to stymie the president's legislative agenda and investigate his administration.

Marmelo was second with A Prince Of Arran, victor of Saturday's Lexus Stakes at the same course, in third. Trainer Adrian O'Brien told the Herald Sun things did not "look good" for the horse after the race.

The White House has been stressing the historical headwinds it faced: In the last three decades, 2002 was the only midterm election when the party holding the White House gained Senate seats. More women than ever were running, along with military veterans and minorities, many of them motivated by Trump's rise. "Do not let their scare tactics frighten you away from the polls".

As it stands, Republicans control both the House and the Senate, which is to say that Trump should have very little problem achieving what he wants. Twenty-five percent described health care and immigration as the most important issues in the election.

"Democrats are inviting caravan after caravan, illegal immigrants to flood into our country", he said at a rally on the election's eve Monday.

New Mexico's 2nd district is another key race: Susie Lee, a Democrat, is facing Republican Danny Tarkanian for the House seat held by Democrat Jacky Rosen, who is challenging Dean Heller, and Nevada's 4th district, where GOP candidate Cresent Hardy is facing off against Democrat Steven Horsford.

"I think he's preying upon people's fears", said Jay Hutchins, 49, a Democrat voting in Silver Spring, Maryland, said of Trump.

"Most [Democratic candidates] were talking about the fact that if Donald Trump is in charge, Americans who have preexisting conditions or any kind of health challenge for themselves or their family, won't be able to buy health care", he said.

"I think everyone was bracing for any possible, insane scenario to show itself tonight but it basically looks like the baseline consensus forecast was correct", said Michael Purves, head of equity derivatives strategy at Weeden & Co, New York.

"Tomorrow will be a new day in America", said House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who's in line to become the next House speaker should Democrats take the majority. It would be the first time the party has controlled the House since 2010.

At least one Senate race may not be decided Tuesday.

The campaign will be the most expensive midterm in history, projected by the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics to exceed $5 billion. Other records were also falling. According to data compiled by The Associated Press, 237 women ran for the House as major-party candidates this year.

As of Wednesday, voters were on track to send at least 100 women to the House, surpassing the previous record of 84.
