A Russian Su-27 made a unsafe pass ahead of a US Navy EP-3 Aries taking part in a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation military exercise in global air space above the Black Sea on Monday.

A Russian Su-27 fighter jet intercepted a U.S.

The Russian jet approached and identified the aircraft as a U.S. Navy EP-3E Aries spy plane, it said.

The encounter lasted a total of 25 minutes, in which the Russian SU-27 jet passed directly in front of the US EP-3 aircraft at a high speed, the US defence officials said.

The U.S. EP-3 Aries came out of Souda Bay, Greece, and was conducting routine operations.

In what the US Navy is calling a risky manoeuvre, a Russian Sukhoi fighter jet intercepted a US Navy aircraft multiple times over the Black Sea airspace. "We expect them to behave within global standards set to ensure safety and to prevent incidents".

This latest provocation comes as North Atlantic Treaty Organisation conducts training exercises as part of Trident Juncture.

"The smallest lapse of focus or error in airmanship by the intercepting aircrew can have disastrous consequences".

It's unclear how close the aircraft came to hitting each other or whether the Russian fighter was armed.

At least six US Air Force spy planes conducted a number of flights along Russia's borders on November 5.

"The U.S. aircraft was operating in accordance with worldwide law and did not provoke this Russian activity", the statement reads.

Harrowing video footage of the encounter released by the Navy also shows the Russian fighter turning on its afterburners to bank in front of the Navy plane, an action that created vibrations felt by the crew inside the American aircraft.
