Chinese start-up Royole claims crown of world’s ‘first foldable phone’

According to Samsung Exynos' Twitter page, the company plans to show off the new Exynos processor on November 14th.

The device does not fold flat and was quite hard to hold, Bell said, adding that the plastic display lifted a little over the hinges and made a "crunching sound" while folding.

Since this is yet another Android Go product, don't expect to be blown away by specs; the Samsung Galaxy J4 Core is a budget device through-and-through but should be more than capable for anyone who needs a stylish Android Go phone.

Mr Justin Denison, a senior vice-president of mobile product marketing, showed a prototype with a screen he said measured 18.5cm diagonally.

He did not reveal how thick the device is.

The unfolded screen of the upcoming phone is bigger than Samsung's biggest smartphone, the Note9, which is 6.4 inches, and the iPhone XS Max at 6.5 inches.

"The foldable display lays the foundation for a new kind of mobile experience", said Koh Dong-jin, president and CEO of the IT and mobile communications division at Samsung. Google is working with Samsung to help launch a device next year. Huawei is planning to release a 5G foldable phone in mid-2019.

Royole said it would start filling orders in late December. These are first generation devices but imagine some years from now where physical ports have been removed, driving electronics significantly reduced in size, and batteries perhaps flexible, too.

Samsung and Huawei have been vying to be the world's first developer of a foldable smartphone.
