Representative-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez joined a group of climate justice protesters in the office of once (and future?) Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi on Tuesday morning. Law&Crime has previously covered the Sunrise Movement here.
WASHINGTON-Democratic Rep. -elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, on Tuesday rallied a group of climate-change demonstrators waging a sit-in in the office of Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, office, an encounter that touched off a display of mutual admiration between the 78-year-old matriarch and the millennial upstart.
The group came bearing a petition outlining some of their demands.
"[Pelosi's] office has responded quickly, and she has recommended the reinstatement of the Select Committee on Climate Change", she tweeted. Let's protect the lives of all working people-black, brown, and white-from the ravages of disaster and pollution.
The incoming Congresswoman from NY addressed the group briefly before police came in to arrest demonstrators who refused to leave the hallway outside Pelosi's office. The incoming representative is believed to be the first elected Democratic Party member of Congress to have ever joined a protest outside their own party's leadership office, according to Justice Democrats communications director, Waleed Shahid.
United Nations nuclear watchdog says Iran abiding with 2015 deal limits
Monday's IAEA report, however, asserted that the agency had accessed all the sites in Iran that it needed to visit. The other parties to the JCPOA have repeatedly announced that the deal is working and should stay in place.
"And so ... the Democrats - they're overplaying their hand ..." While we can't know what course Ocasio-Cortez will take once she comes under the full institutional pressures of the Democratic party, the Left should take heart in her early steps - and support her to push further. "We do not have a choice". Ocasio-Cortez, a democratic socialist who became a progressive star after stunning Rep. Joe Crowley (D., N.Y.) in June's primary and easily won election in New York's heavily Democratic 14th district, joined climate activists calling for a "Green New Deal". "There is no other option".
One thing that most of Pelosi's detractors don't talk about but which I have freely admitted for years was that she was a very powerful and effective speaker. "We are inspired by the energy and activism of the many young activists and advocates leading the way on the climate crisis, which threatens the health, economic security and futures of all our communities".
Pelosi has pledged to reinstate a special committee on climate change after Democrats take control of the House. Simply put, although he lost the majority to Democrats in the new House, he warned them on Twitter. And House Democrats can not afford to put forward anyone less than their smartest, savviest, most tenacious and strategic member - someone with a track record of successful leadership.
The Pelosi detractors are circulating a letter and trying to accumulate enough signatures to showcase the breadth of the Democratic opposition to Pelosi. We don't need more investigation. Democrats must propose bold and serious solutions on climate.
