I hope that more people will understand that effective treatment keeps people who are HIV positive healthy, and it protects their partners.

Mr Varadkar emphasised that it is virtually impossible for people who are HIV positive and getting treatment to pass on the disease and he urged everybody to know their HIV status.

British MP Lloyd Russell-Moyle told the House of Commons that he is HIV-positive in an effort to battle stigma about the disease ahead of the 30th anniversary of World AIDS Day.

"We have the ability to end new HIV transmissions as well as end stigma and discrimination, not only here, but globally, and I hope we can all make that our mission", he told fellow lawmakers, who gave him a standing ovation at the end of his speech, something hardly ever seen in parliament.

"[I hope] that my story might encourage others to get tested and ultimately begin their treatment earlier on".

"Those who have HIV or who have recently been diagnosed should know that they are free to pursue every aspect of public life without hindrance".

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn was present when Mr Russell-Moyle made the announcement, of which he felt "relieved" to have done so.

"It is so important for people living with HIV to be better represented across public and political spheres, and as a serving MP to be openly living with the virus, Lloyd is already impacting positive change". "I was 22 years old, and diagnosed early".

World AIDS Day takes place on the 1st December each year and has been celebrated since 1988. The Cayman Islands Red Cross also offers education on sex, sexuality, HIV testing and counselling, as well as condom distribution.
