President Donald Trump took to Twitter on Thursday night to attack the media at the same time a bomb threat was called in to New York City's Time Warner Center, home to the CNN offices, which were evacuated.

"Several fire alarm bells rang inside CNN's NY newsroom, signaling an evacuation shortly after 10:30 p.m.", CNN itself reported.

Columbus Circle is where the Time Warner Centre is located.

"We are now searching the entire building".

Security officers evacuated the building as a precaution and called police.

Pre-recorded programming was played temporarily as live studios were put on lockdown.

Outside the building, CNN's Brian Stelter and Don Lemon continued to broadcast.

"We were evacuated in the middle of my live show".

The network is airing taped programming due to the disruption, including "Anderson Cooper 360" on the East Coast. "NYPD is investigating. Stay tuned". Police units then swept the building with the NYPD bomb squad on standby.

The caller who phoned in the threat claimed there were five bombs inside the building, New York's WNBC-TV reported, citing a police source.

The network's bureau was evacuated in October after a package with an explosive device, addressed to former CIA Director John Brennan, was discovered, officials said.

Police gave the all clear shortly before midnight Eastern time (5am United Kingdom time) after dozens of police officers searched the building floor by floor.
