The plan continues the recent NHS trend of focusing on prevention and early detection, by detailing that the biggest cash injections will go to Global Positioning System, mental health and community care, increasing funding for primary and community care by at least £4.5 billion and aiming to curb the reliance on hospitals.
As part of the long-term plan, the Government confirmed a £4.5 billion new service model for the 21st century across England, where health bodies come together to provide better, joined up care in partnership with local government. Parents of every baby will also receive better mental health support.
Described as a blueprint to make the NHS fit for the future, as part of the plan there is a pledge to spend an extra £4bn a year on a range of measures, from improving neonatal care to transforming mental health provision.
"This will mean a step change in the recruitment of worldwide nurses to work in the NHS and we expect that over the next five years this will increase nurse supplies by several thousand a year", the document says, adding that a workforce plan will be published this year.
They also claim 150,000 heart attacks, strokes and dementia cases will be prevented and promise three million people will benefit from improved stroke, respiratory and cardiac services.
It will set out the priorities for a 3.4% five-year funding increase announced by Mrs May in June.
The Prime Minister said "we're seeing more people, we're treating more people", but that extra demand had made it hard to reach objectives on treating A&E patients within four hours, making two-month cancer diagnoses, and overall 18-week waiting times.
