It's unclear how much say Darnold had in the hiring of Gase, but the 21-year-old quarterback reportedly thought Gase was the best candidate after talking with the coach Monday night over FaceTime.

According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the former Green Bay Packers coach is planning to sit out the next year after losing out on the New York Jets' head-coaching job, which went to former Miami Dolphins coach Adam Gase. ESPN's Jeff Darlington was the first to report the hire.

That could mean the Dolphins already know who their next head coach will be but they just waiting until that coach's season is over.

Gase, who was sacked by the Dolphins after his third season in Miami netted just seven wins, was considered one of the top coaching candidates despite posting back-to-back losing seasons with the Fins.
