Sheriff criticized over Parkland shooting response removed from office

Florida governor suspends Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel

"Sheriff Israel has repeatedly failed and has demonstrated a pattern of poor leadership", DeSantis said in a statement on Friday, accusing Israel of demonstrating "repeated incompetence and neglect of duty".

"The massacre might never have happened had Broward had better leadership in the sheriff's department", DeSantis said during a news conference outside the Broward Sheriff's Office headquarters in Fort Lauderdale on Friday.

"I look forward to returning soon as the sheriff of Broward County".

The attorney declined to say whether Israel can collect a pension for his years as sheriff. These incidents demonstrate Sheriff Israel's repeated incompetence and neglect of duty.

"I have issued an executive order suspending Scott Israel as the sheriff of Broward County", he said as cheers erupted from attendees. The Florida Senate would make the final decision.

Israel acknowledged the Parkland shooting victims in his rebuttal to the governor.

"He fails to listen to the people", Bell said of Israel, according to CNN. "Our community and our kids will be much safer now that Sheriff Israel is out of office". "This was about politics, not about Parkland".

He added: "Today he merely fulfilled a campaign promise".

"Needed a fresh start at the South Florida Water Management District", Gov. DeSantis said on Thursday. But the change made to BSO policy by Sheriff Israel appears to me to mean that doing so was left at his discretion.

When authorities arrived at the scene, the baby boy was fast asleep in Ivic's arms and the passenger's coat. She runs up to him, he stretches out his arms and she takes him into hers and darts back to the bus.

Shortly after Israel's second term began, a man retrieved a handgun from his luggage at Fort Lauderdale's airport and opened fire, killing five. Israel's lawyer, Stuart Kaplan, said this week the sheriff did nothing warranting removal and his future should be left to Broward voters in the 2020 election.

Following the February 14 mass shooting, Israel said his agency "immediately began to make changes that will make Broward County and our students safer".

Under Florida law, he is entitled to a hearing in the Florida Senate, which can decide to reinstate the sheriff or remove him from office. The attack, which also left dozens wounded, is one of the deadliest mass shootings in recent United States history.

The aircraft that DeSantis is using is a twin-engine Beechcraft King Air seized by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement as part of a drug bust. Rick Scott, had refused to suspend the sheriff, saying he wanted to wait until investigations were complete before deciding.

Israel said then he would not resign.

Israel said that any deputies who are found to have acted inappropriately or failed to act would be dealt with.

In his remarks, the sheriff boasted of his accomplishments while at the helm of an agency with more than 5,400 employees, including deputies and firefighters.

Some of the failures and missteps highlighted in the commission's report ranged from unlocked and unmanned gates on the Parkland campus to an inadequate public-address system. Seven other deputies who arrived within minutes also failed to enter, even as officers from neighboring Coral Springs went into the building. It also notes that six nearby Broward sheriff's deputies "did not immediately move towards the gunshots to confront the shooter".
