McConnell to call Senate vote on Democrats' Green New Deal

Senate Majority Leader Mitch Mc Connell speaks after a Republican policy lunch on Capitol Hill in Washington

Mitch McConnell is going to force Senate Democrats to cast a vote on progressives' Green New Deal

"I've noted with great interest the 'Green New Deal.' We're going to be voting on that in the Senate; giving everybody an opportunity to go on record and see how they feel about the 'Green New Deal, '" said McConnell. Rather than fall for the ploy, Democrats voted "present", except for red-state Democratic senators who voted no.

"The last thing we need to do right now is trade pointless-absolutely pointless-show votes back and forth across the aisle", McConnell told Schumer January 10 on the Senate floor.

A digest of the top political stories from the Globe, sent to your inbox Monday-Friday. "Today marks the dawn of a new era of climate action", he said. Almost all Democrats in Congress who are running for president in 2020 have expressed support for the measure.

Sen. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is still in the early stages of courting unsuccessful 2018 congressional candidate Amy McGrath to run against Sen.

Conservative talk radio host Brian Mudd says the Green New Deal is environmental socialism. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), a possible 2020 contender, said at a Christian Science Monitor breakfast on Tuesday.

Asked about the proposal Tuesday, Klobuchar said she was a supporter of the broad idea, but kept some distance from the details.

In her concession speech, McGrath said she was thankful for the commonwealth's support during her candidacy. "I see it as a jumpstart". "So, look, the political stunts are not going to get us anywhere". Ed Markey, D-Mass., unveiled the "Green New Deal" framework last week.

Broncos have agreement to trade for Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco
The Baltimore Ravens have agreed to trade former Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco to the Denver Broncos, per a report by Adam Schefter . A year ago he threw for 12 touchdowns and six interceptions, completing 61 percent of his passes, in nine games.

The proposal includes progressive agenda items like universal healthcare and a federal jobs guarantee. Ocasio-Cortez's spokesman also sent reporters a memo in which the congresswoman's office contradicted the resolution by taking positions on agricultural emissions, nuclear energy and air travel that did not appear in the formal legislation. However, it's received far less support and more pause from moderate Democrats while receiving criticism from Republicans.

"I really don't like their policy of taking away your auto, of taking away your airplane rights, of 'let's hop a train to California, ' of you're not allowed to own cows anymore!"

The resolution is expected to fail in the Senate. Ocasio-Cortez has subsequently described the fact sheet, which has been deleted from her website, as a "draft".

Others are (tepidly) admiring the Republican leader's strategy. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi derisively referred to the House version of the bill as a "green dream", while only 11 of the 47 senators who caucus with the Democrats have signed on to sponsor the bill. In July 2017, Republicans forced a vote on a single-payer health care system.

"Instead of trying to cause mischief, the #Republican Party should put forward its own serious proposal to address #climatechange", Democratic Senator Sheldon Whitehouse wrote on Twitter on Tuesday.

This isn't a new Republican trick.
