As for myself, I know this is an unpopular opinion, but as someone who was pretty disappointed by Octopath Traveler, I can't say I'm particularly looking forward to a new game, even less so if it's a free-to-play game.
Square Enix recently announced on their Japanese website that a new Octopath Traveler game is now being developed for iOS and Android devices and will be free-to-play. This format mirrors the distinct campaigns that were tied to Octopath Traveler's cast of heroes.
Set within the continent of Osterra, the plot features three conquerors which you as "the chosen one" will go up against to stop.

Octopath Traveler, the critically acclaimed turn-based RPG that released on the Nintendo Switch a year ago is getting a prequel, this time on mobile. That being said, the characters from the Switch version will also appear in some form. According to the first trailer above, the artwork will look remarkably similar to the Switch title, although the gameplay will be optimized for touchscreens.
The mobile game is a prequel that takes place several years before the original Octopath Traveler happens.
At the time of writing, Square Enix has not mentioned whether it plans to bring Champions of the Continent to the West or not. While the game will launch with eight playable characters again, there will also be additional characters added later. Once again there will be eight stories to explore (with more content planned after launch) and the game will apparently remain a single-player experience.
