Actresses, CEO's among those arrested in college admissions scam

According to the US-based media reports, Hollywood actresses Huffman and Lori Loughlin have been charged along with almost 50 other people in what the United States prosecutors say was a scheme in which wealthy parents paid bribes to get their children into some of the nation's most elite colleges by faking or facilitating ACT/SAT exams.

The parents paid bribes for administrators to doctor their kids' admissions exams and paid coaches to recruit students as athletes even if they did not end up playing sports in college, Lelling said.

Defendant William Singer was paid roughly $25 million dollars by parents to help their children get in to schools.

Loughlin and her husband, designer Mossimo Giannulli, agreed to pay bribes of US$500,000 (S$670,000) in a scheme that involved cheating on college entrance exams to help their daughters, Isabella and Olivia Giannulli, get into the University of Southern California, according to court documents. She is accused of paying $15,000 to an organization that allegedly facilitated additional time and corrected answers on their daughter's SAT exam. Huffman, like Loughlin, was recorded on a phone call with a cooperating witness, according to the indictment.

Before Felicity Huffman was indicted as part of a nationwide college admission cheating scandal, the actress was busy visiting college campuses with her daughter.

Those arrested include two SAT/ACT administrators, one exam proctor, nine coaches at elite schools, one college administrator and 33 parents according to Andrew Lelling, the US Attorney for MA. Giannulli has also been charged in the indictment.

She later said her mother had been such a huge help in getting her into the business by helping her with things like auditions.

Singer also fabricated "impressive athletic profiles" for applicants to apply as athletes - knowing full well that universities have allocated slots for students who play sports.

According to the complaint, another parent "conspired to bribe" Heinel, the USC senior associate athletic director, to designate his daughter as a recruit to the USC basketball team in order to get her into the university.

Full House star Lori Loughlin, who played Aunt Becky on the beloved sitcom, and Felicity Huffman were among 50 people charged in an Federal Bureau of Investigation probe of the NCAA, ABC reports.

Lelling said Singer's clients paid up to $6.5 million for both services.

"I don't know how much of school I'm gonna attend", Giannulli said in August.

Other parents include the founder and chairman of a packaging company for the food and beverage industry who lives in Aspen, Colorado, and NY.
