Android Q is officially available for Pixel devices starting today, and while we're busy flashing it and preparing to deliver all of the stuff you need to know about, we'd like to take this time to outline specifically what Google mentions in its own release notes.

This is the first Android Q beta of several before its full release, which will likely be in fall.

These might be some of the most onerous changes for developers in Android Q, which is why, as the Android Developers Blog post reads: "We are bringing these changes to you early, so you can have as much time as possible to prepare". With the final design with Android Q relying on feedback from the beta program and users free to offer more insight and suggestions, tearing into upcoming features and improvements ahead of their respective finalization could become much more hard. Coming to the Pixel phones, the original Pixel smartphones have already received the promised 2-year Android OS updates. So if you are using a ride share app you can let it track your location while it's in use, but forbid the app from learning your location data when not. However, if you don't have the status bar percentage enabled, Android Q still won't show you your battery percentage above your quick settings, which is annoying to say the least.

This is pretty neat and resembles what you can simulate with an app like Focos, which lets you change the shape of the bokeh from a circle to, say, a star, or triangle, or heart. This data can also be used to create 3D images or support AR photography use cases.

Controlling apps that access photos, videos and audio files have become easier to manage on Android Q. Also, apps are required to use the system file picker inside the Downloads folder so that users can choose which files can be access by the app.

For example, a browser could display a panel with connectivity settings like Airplane Mode, Wi-Fi (including nearby networks), and Mobile Data.

If you're using any Pixel phone though, you're set.

Developers can publish share targets that launch a specific activity in their apps with content attached, and these are shown to users in the share UI.
What are your thoughts on the Android Q Beta 1? At the other end of the scale, there's a Wi-Fi performance mode to increase speed and lower latency at the expense of battery life.

Now, for the most important question: What does the Q in Android Q stand for? Android Q updates transport layer security to TLS 1.3, which Google claims can establish a secured connection 40 percent faster than TLS 1.2.
