Hundreds of Edinburgh schoolchildren and university students are to strike on Friday due to institutional inaction over climate change.

"We've been talking to some students who aren't able to come to our strike because it's too far, and they're doing their own mini-marches around their schools", says organizer Julia Sampson.

There are 301 candidates (223 individuals, and 78 organizations) for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize, according to the Nobel Foundation.

Last year, Thunberg stopped going to school every Friday and instead protested in front of the Swedish Parliament to demand more effective measures against climate change.

Shenton College student Ruri Lawrence, 11, was with her sister and mother at the protest. And while the district says it encourages students to be informed and express their views, they should do it "outside the school day".

UK youth strikes are being organised by a number of organisations including Youth Strike 4 Climate, UK Student Climate Network and the UK Youth Climate Coalition. "The combination of persuasive social media and a noteworthy subject will lead to different perspectives in our diverse community", the letter from the principal, obtained by HKFP, said.

We speak on behalf of all the students, youth and adults who care about this issue in Hong Kong and who strike today.

There are marches scheduled at 1,769 sites in 112 countries.

The first strike ran concurrently with over fifty more strikes across the United Kingdom, according to Youth Strike 4 Climate.

Hong Kong is a wealthy city which is vulnerable to the many threats of climate change from stronger typhoons to rising sea levels and increased risk of disease. "With our futures at stake, we call for radical legislative action to combat climate change and its countless detrimental effects on the American people". With little action from the national government, time is running out, and many teens are fearful for both the present and future condition of the climate.

"And her message was she stands with you in unity and empowerment to act".

Our futures are at stake. Tomorrow we #schoolstrike for our future. On the steps of Parliament House, at Fed Square, outside the State Library, all the places of stone, glass and concrete, they're flocking, in bright colours, with rainbow signs.
