WASHINGTON - Beto O'Rourke, the youthful Texan who gained a national following with his long-shot election battle against U.S. Senator Ted Cruz past year, told a Texas TV station on Wednesday he will seek the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination.

"I could care less about your party persuasion", O'Rourke said.

After months of speculation, O'Rourke formally announced on Thursday that he would seek the Democratic presidential nomination to challenge Trump.

"Well, I think he's got a lot of hand movement", Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.

One of O'Rourke's former border colleagues, U.S. Rep. Filemon Vela, D-Brownsville, said he was glad to see O'Rourke in the race.

O'Rourke is also reportedly known for his vehement criticism of US President Donald Trump's policies. This is just one recent example in O'Rourke's career of neglecting taxpayers. Kamala Harris noted that a "record number of women and people of colour" are running and added that she was looking forward to "substantive debates" with candidates including O'Rourke. "This will help John Cornyn and help the Republicans", Branham said.

In a Vanity Fair profile that came out on Wednesday the former Texas Congressman says he's "just born to be in" the 2020 Presidential race.

O'Rourke, 47, served three terms in Congress representing a region of West Texas along the USA border with Mexico. Ted Cruz previous year, he was little known outside his hometown of El Paso, on Texas' border with Mexico.

According to the US-based media reports, O'Rourke's latest US Senate bid triggered a torrent of media attention and excited US voters in a Democratic party that reportedly desperate for fresh political faces.

But Branham said he believes O'Rourke could ultimately have another position in mind as he launches this presidential bid.
